The research team from the University named after David Ben-Gurion in the Negev (Israel) conducted an experiment to capture data using headphones and the computer speakers. On a new method reported in the publication Bleeping Computer.
The method of carrying out the attacks, named by specialists the MOSQUITO assumes that your computer is infected with a special virus that produces a reversion of the output audio jacks. Infected machine essentially turns the speakers and headphones at the same time and the transmitters of the sound information, and in some sort of microphones.
Malicious software is able to convert a local saved files on your computer into audio signals and transmit them to the cyber criminals. Host machine, using the same virus receives information through a speaker or earphone, and then converts it back to a file.
In the conducted experiment involved an array of binary data which transmitted at a distance of from one to nine meters. The exchange rate was up to 1800 bits per second. The environmental noise, sounding human speech or music has not made any significant interference in the malicious action of the virus.
According to the researchers, the transmission speed falls sharply when speakers of two computers facing each other or when communicating changes the frequency of the sound. The researchers explain that the initial optimization of the audio signals of the computer that is the human ear, and not for machine perception.
Experts note that it is unlikely such a problem for the attackers will be critical. How to avoid such attack is still unknown.
