No part of the brain had almost no effect on the life of 84-year-old man from Northern Ireland. Reported by the New York Post, citing research published in the medical journal BMJ Case Reports.
The patient went to the hospital with complaints of frequent falls and a feeling of instability, which appeared to him a few months ago. In addition, he spoke about weakness in the extremities of the left side of the body. Otherwise his health was good thinking maintain clarity, disturbance of speech or vision was missing.
Computed tomography showed that in place of the right frontal lobe of his brain is a large cavity with air, the diameter of which is nine inches. The additional examination in magnetic resonance imaging revealed close to a large osteoma — benign bone tumor, the development of which, apparently, led to the formation of a cavity. In addition, doctors found a violation of blood supply of the corpus callosum — a plexus of nerve fibers connecting the cerebral hemispheres.
The patient was offered an operation, during which will be held the cleaning of air-filled cavity and removed the tumor. The man appreciated the possible consequences and refused surgical intervention. After this he was discharged from the hospital.
In 2017, it was reported that American doctors discovered in the brain of 27-year-old male giant arachnoid cyst, which flattened right hemisphere of the brain.
