“It’s very bad, I would say. The cult of sport was very serious in the Soviet Union. Now this is not even close. Football, for example, the most popular sport in the country, but its popularity is rapidly falling, because falling interest in the sport as a whole”, — said the athlete.

According to Shubenkova, the situation with athletics is even worse: “Pro athletes usually remember is that at the Olympics. For comparison, in other countries people sometimes pay to look at me.”

Runner also noticed the issue with the coaches. “New do not come, but the old ones don’t fit modern realities. This is especially true of doping topics. These coaches in the years of their youth have learnt to achieve results with substances and there is no other way”, — he said.

Shubenkov, who 27 years — the only one in the history of Soviet and Russian track and field athlete, who won world championship medals in the hurdles at 110 meters. He also became a three-time European champion at the same distance.
