Russia is trying to redraw international boundaries and uses force, economic and diplomatic methods. This was stated by the head of the Pentagon James Mattis during the meeting with the defence Ministers of Finland and Sweden. The transcript of his speech published on the official website of the Department.

According to him, the destabilizing behavior of Russia recalls that respect for the law and territorial integrity must be protected. James also asked not to forget about the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940, the Russian-Swedish wars, the events in Georgia and Ukraine. He noted that the United States, Sweden and Finland share similar views on the problems in the region.

In March 2014 in the Crimea held a referendum in which over 90 percent of voters supported its reunification with Russia. In the same month, the relevant law was signed by Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Most Western Nations do not recognize Crimea as part of Russia and consider the results of the illegal referendum that was the basis for the imposition of sanctions. Moscow insists that the Peninsula became part of the country legally.
