Prominent journalists, artists and science has asked President Vladimir Putin to take personal control of the head of the Chechen branch “the Memorial” Ouba Titiev, who is accused of drug possession. The letter is published on the website of the organization.
“Causes indignation the cynical use of the legal system for the implementation of this action of intimidation of human rights defenders and all people of good will seeking the rule of law and respect for human rights in the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation. We appeal to You as the guarantor of the Russian Constitution with a request to ensure immediate transfer of the case Titieva at the Federal level, to take this case to control and put an end to harassment of Memorial,” reads the document transmitted to the presidential administration.
Appeal to Putin was signed by 60 people. Among them: human rights activist Lyudmila Alexeyeva, actress Liya Akhedzhakova and Chulpan Khamatova, writers Lyudmila Ulitskaya and Dmitry Bykov, the Director, Pavel Lungin, editor in chief of “Novaya Gazeta” Dmitry Muratov, journalist Leonid Parfyonov and others. Also the letter has been signed by the mufti of Moscow, Ildar Alyautdinov and test of space systems, Hero of Russia Sergey Nefedov.
The authors of the text called the case against Titieva fabricated, and noted that thus the authorities of Chechnya wanted to leave the Republic “memorial”, who denounced local officials and security forces in human rights violations. “Titiev is not the first critic of the Republican authorities, which local law enforcement authorities allegedly found the drugs. Evident that the authorities of Chechnya, so get rid of an inconvenient organization and Titieva revenge for his human rights activities”, — the document says.
Oub Titiev arrested in January in the case of possession of drugs police found in his car a large package of marijuana. “Memorial” has recognized him as a political prisoner.
The last few months of the North Caucasian human rights activists said the pressure and threats. 17 January, unknown persons set fire to office of “Memorial” in Ingushetia, January 22 in Makhachkala has burnt down belonging to the human rights center of the car. The next day the employees of the organization have received death threats. March 28 near his home was beaten by the head of the Dagestani “Memorial” Sirajuddin Gaziev.
