The President of the United States Donald trump tried to convince German Chancellor Angela Merkel to abandon support of the project of construction of the pipeline “Nord stream-2”. On Thursday, may 17, informs German TV channel N-TV, citing sources.

This question leaders of the United States and Germany were discussed at the talks in Washington in late April. In exchange for the abandonment of the project trump was ready to offer the EU a new agreement on mutual trade, told the N-TV.

Previously, on 17 may, the US said that “Nord stream-2” threatens Europe’s energy security and can fall under us sanctions. Germany insists that the project is purely economic in nature. While Berlin is considered important to maintain the supply of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine.

May 10, Merkel said that Europe can no longer rely on U.S. security. She called on European countries to start their own to control “their destiny.”

In March, trump has signed a decree on the introduction of duties on U.S. imports of steel and aluminum. In response, the EU authorities have threatened to impose retaliatory protectionist measures. May 1, Washington agreed to postpone for 30 days commencement of the duty on steel and aluminium to Europe. The EU insists on the full exemption from rates “forever”.

“Nord stream-2” project of a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany that would connect the two countries across the Baltic sea. The total capacity of the project is estimated at 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The pipeline is scheduled for 2019.
