Researchers from the Center of resistance to antibiotics Emory described a new strain of antibiotic-resistant bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae, which are the causative agents of pneumonia and other dangerous infections. This species with increased virulence (ability to infect), was isolated from a patient in the United States. About it reported in a press release on EurekAlert!.
The analysis showed that the isolate of Klebsiella pneumoniae shows heteroresistance to the antibiotic Christina, that is, this feature has a small subpopulation of bacteria. Due to its toxicity, colistin is an antibiotic of the last frontier, and used only if other drugs prove to be useless. The new strain is also resistant to a wide range of antibiotics group carbapenems.
Scientists say that the isolate is not as strong a virulence as the one that had been allotted to a Chinese hospital in 2016, but he is the first that demonstrates a strong resistance to the antibiotic. Previously studied hypervirulent strains successfully respond to treatment. Because of this, the researchers will continue to study a new kind of bacteria to determine how easy it can strengthen its pathogenicity.
