Greece and Macedonia have agreed to change the name of the former Yugoslav Republic. About it writes BBC News.
To a common decision after years of protests and negotiations came the Greek and Macedonian Prime Ministers Alexis Tsipras and Zoran Zaev. As noted, after the signing country to be called Republic of North Macedonia. Its national language is Macedonian, and the citizens would be known as Macedonians.
This name must be used at both the international and the bilateral levels, so it will have to get used to and other States. Agreed that you can use both English and Slavonic.
Now the document must be approved by the two governments. After that Skopje will qualify for membership in the EU and in NATO. Before the negotiations on the European Union was blocked by Greece.
The dispute about the name erupted after Macedonia gained independence from Yugoslavia. It is not recognized by Athens, as Greece has a province with the same name and the new country could apply to it. In the course of negotiations the parties have given including the names of Upper Macedonia or New Macedonia.
