Advertising tools Facebook automatically marked approximately 65 thousand Russians, calling them “concerned in the treason” to the Motherland. About it reports The Guardian.
The administration of the social network are not directly disclose information about users to third parties, however, advertisers have the opportunity to easily identify potential traitors, using only publicly available tools. For example, they can target solely on the marked users from Russia, and then record the IPS of those who clicked on the link.
The experts noted that due to the algorithms of the social network, the Russian government also could easily calculate the potential traitors. “Officially, the Internet is not censored in Russia. However, these methods, which Facebook probably unwittingly gave to the Russian authorities, state agencies will greatly facilitate the ability to consistently track individuals that are marked as potential traitors to the Motherland”, — said a lecturer of political science at the University of Aarhus Mette Skak (Mette Skak).
Representatives of Facebook said that the algorithm was intended only to identify the “historical” betrayal. “The betrayal was included as a category, given its historical significance,” they said. A more detailed explanation of the administration chose not to give. Later disputed category was deleted without any comment.
In April 2018, the media learned about the largest data breach in the history of Facebook. The administration of the social network threatened data 87 million users. The head of Facebook mark Zuckerberg said that the leak had touched him.
