A Turkish court has sentenced to life imprisonment 84 people who participated in the coup attempt in 2016. As the Agency Anadolu, they are all involved in the capture of the bridge over the Bosphorus in Istanbul, later renamed the martyrs Bridge July 15, and the murder of the 34 citizens.
The court sentenced the 72 accused for attempting to overthrow the constitutional order. Reuters notes that among them were the Colonel and major of the Turkish army. Thus 12 more people received life sentences for murder. In addition, other defendants were given 15 to 17 years in prison for aiding and abetting. Anadolu indicates that all the hearings were attended by 133 arrested.
July 15, 2016 in Turkey, there was a coup which took the lives of 248 people, more than 2.7 thousand were injured. Of the 34 dead on the bridge, all except two policemen, were civilians.
A few days after a coup attempt in the country was introduced the state of emergency, which has been repeatedly extended. The authorities explain this by the need to combat terrorist threats. In particular, we are talking about the organization of the FETO-headed hiding in the U.S. preacher Fethullah gülen. Against the regime are the EU leaders and representatives of the Turkish opposition. In their opinion, it threatens freedom and human rights in the country.
After these events, the country held mass purges in government, the security services, courts, army, educational institutions. The office of the UN high Commissioner for human rights reported that since the authorities had arrested 160 thousand people, the army and the civil service laid off more than 150 thousand people.
