Citizen of Russia Maria Butina detained in Washington on suspicion of espionage. This is stated in the message of the Ministry of justice.
She is accused of conspiracy to commit an agent of a foreign state without adequate registration in the U.S. government. According to the Ministry, Butina was detained July 15. Court of the district of Columbia has decided to leave her in custody until the hearing, which will be held July 18.
According to the indictment, the detained worked for top-ranking officials of the Russian government, which is under US sanctions. She faces up to five years in prison.
The head of the Federation Council Committee on international Affairs Konstantin Kosachev told RIA Novosti that Russia will protect Butino, if confirmed her Russian citizenship.
