The new Deputy chief of the General staff of the Armed forces of Canada appointed Lieutenant-General Paul (Paul) winnick, in origin an ethnic Ukrainian. This is stated on the Agency’s website.
Prior to the appointment winnick was the commander of the land forces of the country. He has also previously held the position of head of the Intelligence command of the canadian armed forces, passed the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan.
Winnick was born in Alberta in a family of poor migrants from Ukraine. Over the past few years he made several visits to their historic homeland, reports “UKRINFORM”. In particular, he went to the village Pozdymyr in the Lviv region, where her parents were born.
The Agency notes that the appointment winnik — the highest achievement of Ukrainian Canadians in the armed forces.
Canada takes the third place in the world (after Ukraine and Russia) in terms of population with Ukrainian roots. It is home to about 1.25 million ethnic Ukrainians. In Alberta, where he was born winnick, their population is just over 300 thousand people.
