The number of Ukrainians living below the poverty line increased from 15 to 25 percent over the past five years. This was stated to journalists in Kharkov, world Bank Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova satu Kähkönen, reports “UKRINFORM”.
According to her, to emerge from the economic crisis, the country it is important to complete the reforms in the health, judicial and banking systems and others. Kähkönen added that Ukraine’s potential is higher than, for example, Poland, Romania, Georgia and Indonesia.
“Ukraine has Europe’s largest reserves of fertile land. Best is its geographical position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. However, state policy in terms of economic development back 20 years. If there are changes, in particular, will create a transparent land market, there will be incentive to improve standards of living”, — said the representative of the financial institution.
She noted that the world Bank gave Kiev more monetary aid than any other country — $ 5.5 billion. Of these, 2.5 billion were spent on investment projects, 2 on support of regional budgets. Besides, 500 million were allocated to Ukraine on gas supplies, said Kähkönen.
