In the U.S. Congress introduced a bill to impose sanctions against the project of the pipeline “Nord stream-2”. This was reported on the website of the author of the initiative, the Senator-Republican John Barrasso.
According to the legislator, Germany and other countries should reduce the amount of natural gas they buy from Russia, not increase it. “When one country allows another aggressive, opportunistic country, such as Russia, to have such a strong impact on its energy security, it becomes a problem,” said Barroso.
He added that the sanctions will allow the NATO countries to avoid manipulation by Russia. The Senator noted that the EU imports 40 percent of its gas from Russia, while Moscow is using this situation as an instrument of political pressure on Europe.
The US President Donald trump has repeatedly stated that the construction of “Nord stream-2” will make Europe and especially Germany dependent on Russia and its energy resources. At a press conference after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki trump has promised that American liquefied natural gas will compete with Russian gas in the struggle for the European market.
The US state Department on July 12 announced that companies participating in the construction of the pipeline “Nord stream-2”, threaten sanctions. “We have made clear that companies operating in the sector of Russian export pipelines, run a business, which carries a risk of sanctions,” — said in a statement.
“Nord stream-2” gas pipeline project between Russia and Germany, which will run under the Baltic sea. The total capacity of the project is estimated at 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. It will give Russia the opportunity to increase gas supplies to Europe by reducing the transit via Ukraine.
