A hundred of Ukrainian sailors were in Greek prison — they would trick to smuggle across the sea of illegal immigrants in Europe. About this on his page in Facebook told the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on human rights Lyudmila Denisova.
She explained that Ukrainians were invited to work on cruise ships and yachts, promised official employment and work under the contract. According to the Ombudsman, recruited mostly sailors, experiencing financial difficulties.
Denisov noted that the rights of detainees in prisons are violated and they are unable to explain to police as translators speaking the Russian or Ukrainian languages, they do not provide. “Without the proper transfer of detainees could not provide proof of his innocence, the lawyer and learn the details of the case in which they appear”, she said.
The Ombudsman added that the sailors are in terrible conditions and do not receive medical care.
According to Denisova, now in the prisons of Greece contains 161 Ukrainian, 112 of them — on charges of transporting illegal migrants. She urged the authorities to adhere to the Convention of the Council of Europe on measures to combat trafficking in persons, which provides for exemption from punishment if the offense was committed under duress.
