The North Atlantic Treaty organization (NATO) has confirmed a large-scale buildup of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean sea off the coast of Syria. The Alliance assessed the strength of Moscow in the region as significant. About it told the official representative Oana Lungescu, according to Haaretz.
“Russia sent to the Mediterranean a considerable naval forces, including ships equipped with modern cruise missiles,” she explained, adding that the unit would not “speculate on the intentions of the Russian fleet”.
Lungescu added that the region needs to show restraint, “in order not to worsen the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in Syria.”
“Many countries in the block are in the Mediterranean, our fleet is constantly there, so we monitor naval activity in the region, including Moscow”, — said the representative of the Alliance.
According to her, NATO soldiers in Syria is not, but the organization supports the efforts of the UN to achieve a political settlement of the conflict.
On 28 August it was reported that the Russian defense Ministry has reinforced the group of warships off the coast of Syria in the Mediterranean sea. It was noted that she was the most powerful since the beginning of operations against illegal armed groups in the country. The composition of the group now includes 10 ships, including the missile cruiser “Marshal Ustinov” and anti-submarine ship “Severomorsk”. Most of them are equipped with cruise missiles “Calibre”. In addition, to the shores of Syria sent two submarines.
On 25 August, the defense Ministry said about a possible U.S. attack on Syria. The Pentagon has denied the information about building up their forces in the region.
