American scientists have developed a pain reliever AT-121, which is stronger than morphine, does not cause addiction and dangerous side effects. This publication reports Science Alert.
The researchers hope that the drug will help to reduce the number of deaths caused by dependence on pain relieving drugs and their overdoses. In 2012 in the U.S. alone, due to the use of opioid analgesics has died more than 16 thousand people.
The new compound acts on the Μ-opioid receptors (MOR) and nociceptin receptors — protein molecules in the neurons of the brain. MOORE are targets for traditional painkillers, the receptors in nociceptin involved in the development of addiction and dependence.
Trial involving rhesus monkeys showed that AT-121 exerted analgesic effects like morphine at concentrations a hundred times lower than usual. Moreover, the drug was able to reduce the level of dependence the animals from oxycodone is a semisynthetic opioid. High-dose AT-121 did not cause respiratory depression, and disturbances in the cardiovascular system.
Scientists hope the findings are confirmed in further tests that will be carried out with the participation of the people.
