Chief Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar in the spring of this year, visited Tehran, according to “Kommersant”, citing a source in the foreign policy circles.

According to him, Lazar was part of the delegation of the state Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, who paid a visit to the Iranian capital on April 8-9. “But in Tehran he had his own program, not associated with the program speaker,” — said the interlocutor of the newspaper.

The Federation of Jewish communities of Russia has not confirmed nor denied the information on the visit of the chief Rabbi of the Russian Federation in Iran, also, there is no any official information about the visit, Lazar in Tehran. However, the Israeli portal Ynet reported that Rabbi met with the leaders of the Jewish community of Iran, visited the synagogue and Jewish school. The decision to include Lazar in the composition of the Duma delegation, as writes the edition, was made personally by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, and in response to objections to the Iranian side, the presence of a Rabbi was made a condition for the arrival of the parliamentarians.

According to “Kommersant”, the trip Lazar could be connected with desire of Moscow to develop Russian-Iranian trade cooperation. Indirectly this version is confirmed by the fact that April 9-10 in Tehran, a delegation of Trade-industrial chamber of Russia which structure included, in particular, representatives of Russian Railways and Rosatom.

Iran does not officially recognize Israel and has no diplomatic relations, but allows for the functioning of the synagogues on their territory and allows you to learn Hebrew in the universities along with other Oriental languages. Israel, in turn, believes Tehran is one of the most significant threats to its existence, including due to the active participation of Iranian forces in the Syrian conflict.
