The use of the helicopter in zastavka Navy would be ineffective, says the former commander of the Baltic fleet, Admiral Vladimir Valuev. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
The Admiral noted that the helicopter is vulnerable to enemy missiles. According to him, a potential enemy, Russia has precision weapons, which this vessel will be about “floating target”. He also added that the functionality would duplicate other vessels included in the Navy.
“Our shipbuilding industry is able to produce ships of any class. Another question — the need to build various combat ships and submarines is due to the naval doctrine or the other country. After weighing all the pros and cons, our military leadership has come to the conclusion that the construction of helicopter carriers for the Russian Navy is impractical, since their functions overlap with other already available weapons, including amphibious ships,” — said Valuev.
In August it was reported that Russia will not build helicopter carriers for its Navy. However, according to Minister of industry and trade Denis Manturov, the Russian Navy must have ships capable to carry helicopters. It is, in particular, about the aircraft carriers cruisers, which should be equipped with a helicopter wing, and amphibious ships, where the helicopters will be used as a means of disembarkation.
In 2011, Russia has concluded with France a contract worth 1.2 billion euros for the construction of two helicopter carrier type “Mistral” — “Vladivostok” and “Sevastopol”. In 2015, the contract was terminated because of the situation in Ukraine. The Kremlin said that France had transferred the funds paid to Russia under the contract (we are talking about a 950 million Euro), and after the return of the equipment Paris will have the right of ownership and can dispose of the ships.
