German troops arrived in Norway on the most large-scale exercises on the Northern flank of NATO after the cold war. About it reports Reuters.
The exercises will be held in late October and early November. They will be attended by 40 thousand troops from 30 NATO countries. They will conduct operations in the air, on land and on the ground in the territory from Finland to Iceland.
Holding such large-scale maneuvers means that NATO wants to strengthen defense against Russia, writes Reuters.
“In recent years the focus has changed as the environment has changed globally and in Europe”, — said the Minister of defence of Norway Frank Bakke-Jensen, who met the German troops in the port of Fredrikstad. Bakke-Jensen added that the Alliance is growing concern about the actions of Russia, which in 2014 is “annexed” Crimea.
Russia plans 11 to 15 September together with China and Mongolia exercises “Vostok-2018”. The maneuvers will be the biggest since the General Secretary of the CPSU Leonid Brezhnev. In them will take part about 300 thousand soldiers and 36 thousand units of equipment.
