The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) believes that diplomacy has exhausted itself in the dialogue on the “Ukrainian question” with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. The head of the Synodal Department for external Church relations Metropolitan Hilarion said the TV channel “Russia-24”.
He told the details of the visit of the Patriarch in Istanbul to the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew. “Externally it was very civilized, polite and even a brotherly talk. Unfortunately, the side of Constantinople not only did not hear our arguments, but even entered, from our point of view, the cowardly and treacherous,” — said the Metropolitan.
Hilarion noted that if Constantinople “will bring his evil plan for the granting of autocephaly [Ukraine], this means that the autocephaly will be given to the splinter group”. “The canonical autocephaly of the Church that will not accept, we in the Russian Church autocephaly of course this is not recognize, and we will have no choice but to break off relations with Constantinople,” said he.
September 8, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church made a special statement on the appointment of Ukraine two exarchs of Constantinople, the representatives of Patriarch Bartholomew. Such actions of the Russian Orthodox Church has called a threat to the unity of the world Orthodoxy.
In July of this year delegation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople during the celebration of the baptism of Russia at the meeting with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko announced the address of Bartholomew’s intention to grant the Kyiv autocephaly.
Autocephalous Orthodox Church — a local Church with its assigned territory, which cannot act other local churches. Autocephaly implies independence from other local churches. Currently in Ukraine there are two Orthodox churches — the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate and the UOC Kyiv Patriarchate. The latter is not recognized by any canonical Orthodox Church.
