The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the revenues that the country receives from the transit of Russian gas to the European Union, to Finance the defense. According to the President, because of this, Russia wants to let the gas bypass the Ukrainian territory, RIA Novosti reported.
“Those revenues that we receive from the transit of gas, is the money that we spend on security and defense, and that is why Russia wants to invest in Nord stream,” — said Poroshenko.
In late August, Ukraine has calculated that after the termination of transit of Russian gas will lose 3 percent of GDP. According to the chief commercial officer of Naftogaz Yuriy Vitrenko, this amount is comparable to the cost of the national army.
On 18 August the President of Russia Vladimir Putin meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that “Nord stream-2” will not prevent the transit of gas through Ukraine, if it is economically profitable.
According to the Ministry of defense of Ukraine, the country’s budget in 2018 is assumed the cost of security and defense in the amount of 165 billion (about 400 billion).
The project “Northern stream-2” involves the construction of a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany under the Baltic sea. The total capacity of the project is estimated at 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The pipeline is scheduled for late 2019.
