American fighter fifth generation F-22 Raptor would have suffered defeat from the Russian su-35 if they had to meet in combat. This opinion was expressed by a military columnist for Business Insider.
According to the author, despite the fact that aerial combat is the main focus of the American fighter, when meeting with the Russian su-35 to face the F-22 Raptor would be at a disadvantage: its advantage in stealth does not play a decisive role under modern conditions of warfare, while it is clearly not enough weapons.
In addition, the su-35 has better maneuverability, which gives him the advantage when evading enemy missiles during a duel at long range and in close aerial combat.
At the same time, Raptor is of little use to intercept enemy aircraft, writes Business Insider. So, when performing a intercept fighter approaching invading their airspace to the plane and transmits on the radio: “Turn around or I’ll have to take measures.” Usually this is accompanied by a demonstration to a potential enemy wing with missiles. “But the F-22 has never been able to do that because of its stealth design all the missiles and bombs are stored inside him,” notes the author.
As explained by Business Insider an expert on military aviation of the Royal United services Institute Justin Bronk, an F-22 with its emphasis on stealth should be used for interception, since “this job can be other cheaper interceptors”, in particular the F-15.
Earlier in September, U.S. fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers near Alaska. Two Tu-95, accompanied by the su-35, were spotted to the West from mainland Alaska. Flew to intercept the two F-22 Raptor.
