The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine was declared Consul of Hungary in Beregovo persona non grata. This is stated on the website of the Ministry.
The Ukrainian foreign Ministry today announced that the Ambassador of Hungary Erno Keskeny. “He was handed a note stating that, according to article 23 of the Vienna Convention on consular relations of 1963 in connection with the activity incompatible with the status of a consular officer, Consul of the Consulate of Hungary in Beregovo must leave the territory of Ukraine within the next 72 hours”, — stated in the message.
The Ukrainian foreign Ministry also hoped that Hungary will further refrain from any hostile action, and its officials from violations of the Ukrainian legislation.
The reason for the expulsion of a diplomat was the scandal with the distribution of their Hungarian passports to Ukrainian citizens at the Consulate in Beregovo, Transcarpathian region. On 19 September this year, Ukrainian media published a video, which the Consul had led the citizens of Ukraine to the oath of allegiance to Hungary, and he urged Ukrainians to hide the fact of obtaining Hungarian citizenship.
Last week, 27 September, the head of the Ukrainian foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said that if Hungary itself will not withdraw the Consul, his matchs with Ukraine “soon”. The Minister of foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Siarto in response threatened that in case of expulsion of a diplomat Budapest’s answer mirrored arrangements.
