Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan will resign prior to October 16, for the dissolution of the National Assembly (Parliament) and conducting early parliamentary elections. He stated this in an interview with France 24.
“In fact, I can say in advance that the elections will be held on 9-10 December, plus or minus a few days. And for this reason I have to resign before October 16,” he said.
Armenian Prime Minister proposed to the National Assembly to hold extraordinary elections of deputies in December, but three of the four parties in the Parliament (Republican party, “Dashnaktsutiun” and “prosperous Armenia” party) opposed. The faction leaders suggested to appoint elections in may 2019 and expressed a willingness to nominate a candidate to head the government if the vote will take place in these terms.
8 Oct Pashinyan held a meeting with the Chairman of the party “prosperous Armenia” and the richest man in the country Gagik Tsarukyan, the parties signed a Memorandum on holding snap elections in December.
Included in the parliamentary opposition, the Republican party of Armenia and Dashnaktsutyun also put forward a number of conditions under which these parties are ready to discuss the holding of elections in December. On 9 October, the number of deputies from the Republican party spoke out in support of the idea in addition, according to Panorama.am.
At this point in the 105-seat Armenian Parliament’s four factions. The largest of them — the faction of the Republican party, which has 50 seats. “Prosperous Armenia” submitted by 31 MP, the party has seven seats. These three factions are in opposition.
Power to the parliamentary minority was passed on may 8, when Pashinyan was elected Prime Minister of Armenia. To this position he was nominated by the faction “EFC” (nine members), which has the largest number of Ministerial portfolios in the government. Eight members of the National Assembly do not belong to any one faction.
