Petro Poroshenko called the granting of autocephaly to Ukraine with a victory over “Moscow demons.” His words are on the official website of the President of Ukraine.
“Today we received autocephaly. This is a great victory of the God-loving Ukrainian people on the Moscow demons, victory of good over evil, light over darkness,” said he, after thanking the citizens for “mass support for this idea and the desire for the local Church”.
On 11 October, the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople expressed a desire to return to the Kyiv Metropolitanate to the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. “We remembered the letter in 1686, about how the Kyiv metropolis was transferred to the Moscow Patriarchate. And the Ecumenical Patriarch as first among equals wants to return to its Canon law and to bring the Church back under the jurisdiction of Constantinople,” — said the official representative of the Patriarchy.
In addition, the Ecumenical Patriarchate lifted the anathema of the Patriarch, the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchy Philaret and Archbishop, the Primate of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church Macarius.
Ukraine has three Orthodox churches: unrecognized UOC-KP and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). The latter is a self-governing Church within the Russian Church and does not require autocephaly.
