The Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the Opposition bloc Vadim Novinsky accused the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew in the violation of ecclesiastical laws for the lifting of the anathema with the leaders of the dissenters. He declared it on air of TV channel “Ukraine”, the video is available on YouTube.
“Anathema could only be removed is the Church, which it imposed. It is the law of laws. And repealing this law can no Bartholomew, no other patriarchs. To change these laws can only Ecumenical Council… If you give the example that if the Pechersk court [of Kiev] abolished the law of a certain us court. Here it has this power”, — Novinsky explained.
He added that Filaret, head of the non-canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kiev Patriarchate, took a terrible sin because of the split of Orthodoxy in Ukraine. Such a sin, according to Novinsky, washed away by repentance.
The MP also criticized the abolition of the rights of the Russian Orthodox Church to the Metropolitan of Kiev. “As to the cancellation of the instrument of accession of the Kyivan Metropolitanate in 1686, again according to Church law, the Statute of limitations on such disputes for 30 years. It took 330 years, during which time much has changed. The Kievan Metropolitanate, which was in the borders, is now one-third of the territory of modern Ukraine. There were no Odessa or Nikolaev or Kherson or Crimea, neither Donetsk nor Kharkiv dioceses within this metropolis. What to do?” — Novinsky explained.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew withdrew the anathemas with the leaders of the non-canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) Filaret and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) Macarius, which imposed anathema in 1990-ies. The Patriarch of Constantinople also abolished the right of the Russian Orthodox Church to the Metropolitan of Kiev, which it had owned since 1686, and entered the stavropegic, i.e. its direct control.
