The European Parliament voted for a complete ban of plastic utensils and other disposable items of plastic in the entire European Union. The new law will come into effect by 2021. This was reported by BBC News.

In addition to disposable cutleries and utensils on the territory of the EU ban cotton swabs, straws for drinking, plastic stirrers for cocktails and sticks for balloons. It is also proposed to limit the use of disposable containers for food and drink, such as plastic cups.

A ban proposed in may of this year, voted 571 MP, 53 opposed. It is intended to affect a solution to the problem of ocean pollution. At the request of one of the members of Parliament, “if nothing is done, by 2050 the ocean will be more plastic than fish.”

In European waters each year is about 150 thousand tonnes of plastic. This is just a small part of the 8 million tons worldwide. Marine animals accidentally eat the plastic waste and die. According to Guardian, the microparticles of plastic are often caught from the ocean for human consumption. The implications of this phenomenon are not fully understood.
