Members of the European Parliament (EP) supported Ukraine and has accused Russia of attempt of assignment of the Azov sea. This is stated in the draft resolution published on the official website of the Department.
“It is not excluded a risk that Russia will take over the existing Ukrainian oil and gas deposits in the Azov sea, once it reaches its goal of turning it into an inner lake”, the document reads.
The draft resolution States that possible tougher sanctions against Russia if the conflict in the sea of Azov will become even more acute. In addition, the EP supported the introduction of new restrictive measures against companies involved in “illegal construction” of the Crimean bridge.
The Ministry also proposed to introduce the post of special envoy of the EU in the Crimea and the Donbass, which will monitor the situation in the area of Maritime conflict.
October 24, Verkhovna Rada, one of leaders of the banned in Russia as extremist organization “the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people,” Refat Chubarov broke the Ukrainian-Russian meeting on fisheries in the Azov sea. During the meeting, the officer demanded to expel from Ukraine the head of the Russian delegation Igor Ruleva due to the fact that he visited the Crimea.
Earlier in October, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko instructed to determine the Maritime boundary between Russia and Ukraine in the Black and Azov seas and the Kerch Strait. According to him, Russia is committed to “complete domination in the black sea region, imposing its own conditions of distribution of the sea area and limit port activities and fishing of Ukraine.”
The situation on the Azov sea intensified before the opening of the Crimean Kerch Strait bridge. Kiev has deemed the building illegal (Ukraine considers Crimea part of its territory — approx. “Of the tape.ru”) and expressed concerns that Russia will block access to that sea.
In March Ukrainian border guards detained a Russian ship “Nord”, accusing sailors of “violating the procedure of entry in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine and departure from it”. The vessel was registered in one of the ports of the Crimea. In August, all legal proceedings against members of the crew were discontinued. The prisoner Nord Ukraine put up for sale.
