Unity Council to create a single national Ukrainian Church should change the name of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). On Friday, October 26, said the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) Filaret, reports TASS.
“The Cathedral will be a combination of all the three churches (UOC-MP, UOC-KP and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) — approx. “Of the tape.ru”) into a single Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Ukraine will be one Orthodox Church,” said Filaret.
In the unification Council will involve all the bishops of the three churches. The Primate added that after the granting of autocephaly, the Church is called the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). In turn, those believers and clergy that do not wish to join the ranks of the one Church should be called the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine, Filaret said.
The transition of the parishes of the UOC-MP in the newly formed UOC will be held by vote of the congregation. Filaret stressed that this process can only be voluntary, but expressed confidence that all the laurels, located on the territory of Ukraine (Kiev-Pechersk, Pochayiv-Dormition Svyatogorsk and) will belong to the Autocephalous churches.
“If two-thirds of the congregation will vote to stay in the Russian Church, but this parish will belong to the Russian Church. If two thirds vote for the Ukrainian Church, the Church together with the parishioners will go to the Ukrainian Church,” said Filaret.
The final decision on the granting of the Tomos of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine will be taken by the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople only after Ukraine will host the unity Council to create a new local Church. This Cathedral should fix associations of all three churches.
In early October, the Ecumenical (Constantinople) Patriarchate proceeded with the granting of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine and removed the anathema from the heads of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. In this regard, the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) 15 Oct severed Eucharistic communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, October 20, declared the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew a schismatic according to Church canons.
