The authorities of Krasnoyarsk region intend to prohibit cutting neokostenelyh horns (antlers) reindeer for the sake of the animal population, according to the website of the administration of Taimyr Dolgan-Nenets municipal district.
The relevant draft resolution of the regional government is already prepared. According to officials, the ban “will contribute to the conservation of unique populations of migratory species and the exclusion of the barbaric attitude to animals.”
The report also notes that earlier the Ministry of ecology and rational nature management of Krasnoyarsk region has strengthened the arrangements for monitoring the use of fauna objects, to detect and prevent poaching.
The question of the need to strengthen the fight against poaching was raised by the head of the Peninsula Sergey Tkachenko in mid-October. He proposed to enhance the effectiveness of protection of the population of wild reindeer through the adoption of the law on the prevention of illicit trafficking of antlers.
The extract of young, filled with blood of the horns of deer are often used in Eastern medicine as a rejuvenating tonic. The poachers cut off the antlers with a defenseless deer at the moment of their crossing the water. After cutting 70 percent of cases the animal is killed. Surviving individuals lose the ability to reproduce due to the lack of stimulating hormones biological substances contained in the antlers.
