The draft law regarding the cultivation of marijuana, will be withdrawn from the Parliament of Georgia. On Friday, 2 November, said the Chairman of the Parliament of the Republic of Irakli Kobakhidze, reports “Interfax”.
About the decision Kobakhidze announced immediately after the meeting with Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II. “The main issue that was discussed with the Patriarch, was the issue of the bill on the cultivation of marijuana. Previously, we have discussed this issue in our team and decided to recall him from Parliament. We never once stated that it is not going to consider this bill without extensive discussion and consensus with society and the Church, and that’s a promise kept,” — said the speaker.
One of the authors of the bill, the Chairman of the “Georgian dream”, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili announced that the cultivation of marijuana for medical and cosmetic purposes brought to the country billions in revenue. However, he drew attention to the fact that the decision cannot be made without the consent of the Church and society.
On 11 September it was reported that the Georgian government has prepared a legislative initiative authorizing the cultivation of marijuana in the country for export of its medical and cosmetic purposes. The initiative, prepared by the Ministry of internal Affairs, met with protests from the Georgian Orthodox Church and a significant part of society. In October the consideration of the bill in Parliament was delayed for two months.
