Ukraine and its partners are developing new sanctions against Russia because of the upcoming elections of the heads of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk republics. The Minister of foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin wrote on Twitter.
“The Kremlin is happy with another circus in order to hide their crimes,” he said. The Minister noted that the international community will react to holding a “fake elections” the strengthening of sanctions. “We, together with our partners already working on it,” he said.
Elections of the heads of DND and LNR will be held on 11 November. Kiev and some Western countries do not recognize the elections in the breakaway republics. The investigators believe that the elections will be a “continuation of criminal acts aimed at violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”.
Two days before the vote, the Prosecutor’s office of Donetsk region opened a criminal case against the organizers of the elections, a criminal case under part three of article 110 of the criminal code of Ukraine (“Encroachment on territorial integrity and inviolability of the country”).
Moscow believes that the Minsk agreement of February 12, 2015 only regulate municipal elections and elections of heads and parliaments do not contradict the complex of measures on settlement of the conflict.
