Inspections of ships in the sea of Azov legitimate, their intensity proportionate to the level of threats from extremists against Russia. About it in interview to the newspaper “Kommersant” said Deputy foreign Minister of Russia Grigory Karasin.
According to him, Russian border guards stepped up security of navigation in the Kerch Strait due to public appeals the leaders of the “Crimean Tatar Mejlis” (an organization banned in Russia), Ukrainian nationalists and politicians to the terrorist attacks on the Crimean bridge. “To the sea of Azov is not applicable to the provisions of the UN Convention on the law of the sea 1982, including freedom of navigation, therefore, the allegation that our audits and inspections are contrary to international Maritime law, not baseless,” he said.
The diplomat said that the allegations of the ships have been delayed for many hours and days are outright lies. “Inspection, as a rule, not exceed three hours. The longest test took five hours. And this was an isolated case,” he explained, adding that more than 90 percent of inspections carried out in places of anchorage, and complaints from the captains was not.
Karasin pointed to the fact that all the charges “invented in Kiev, Washington and Brussels. We recently discussed this issue in Brussels and clarification. It is strange that it still pedaliruetsya there.”
November 21, the Russian foreign Ministry warned Ukraine not to contravene international law attempts to review the present status of the Azov sea. The Ministry noted that the sea of Azov is internal waters of Russia and Ukraine, where freely can walk only vessels of the two countries, and in the waters is not valid the right of transit or innocent passage for foreign vessels.
The situation in the sea of Azov between Russia and Ukraine escalated after the completion of the Krymsky bridge across the Kerch Strait in the spring of 2018. In Kiev believe that Moscow may restrict access to the Azov area. During the conflict the border services of the countries had repeatedly delayed the court.
