Openly gay award for protecting the rights of sexual minorities in Chechnya

Defending the rights of sexual minorities in Chechnya, the representative of “Russian LGBT network” Igor Kochetkov will receive in Moscow the award of the Egor Gaidar. This was stated by “Moscow speaking” a source in the organizing Committee.

Kochetkova will be awarded in the nomination “For actions that contribute to the formation of civil society”. He will receive one million rubles.

The award of the Egor Gaidar awarded annually since 2010 for individual achievement in the field of history, economy, formation of civil society and international relations.

Earlier in August, the OSCE demanded that Russia to report on the violation of gay rights. Among others was asked about how the Chechen administration came to the conclusion about the absence of representatives of sexual minorities in the region.

In July it was reported about the abduction in St. Petersburg, the native of Chechnya Zelimkhan Akhmadov, who had to leave the country from-for suspicions in sexual orientation. At least one of the kidnappers was a fake official identification of a police officer. As it turned out, the kidnapping was involved in the father Akhmadov, who wanted to persuade her son to record a video and claim that he is not a homosexual.

In April of last year, “Novaya Gazeta” published an investigation about the persecution of gays in Chechnya. It was reported about the mass detention of suspected homosexuality of the inhabitants of the Republic, at least three of them died. Igor Kochetkov led the campaign to rescue the victims.
