The problems of Sukhoi Superjet 100, has accused France

A small plaque of Russian aircraft Sukhoi Superjet 100 is connected with the peculiarities of the engine SaM146, supplied by French company Safran. This was reported by the family-owned Demyan Kudryavtsev the newspaper “Vedomosti” top executives of the four airlines operating these aircraft, and three people close to leasing companies who buy such ships.

The problems SaM146 occur in the hot part of the engine where the fuel is burned. “In the combustion chamber or the oil drainage can cause cracks already after 2-4 thousand hours of flight (that is, already in the second year of operation of the airplane), and sometimes after thousands of hours of flight. The engine must be sent to overhaul. Although the manufacturer promises that before the overhaul, the engine should be 7,5-8 thousand hours”, — the newspaper writes.

This feature is part of the SaM146 supplied by Safran, is a “construction defect,” says one of the interlocutors “Vedomosti”. The cause of cracks in the engines is unknown. “To correct the problems in the hot part of the engine needed serious investments, including the expansion of production, but Safran doesn’t want to do”, — the newspaper quotes the employee of one of the leasing companies.

The newspaper adds that at the start of the program it was planned to produce 1.3 thousand units of Sukhoi Superjet 100, whereas currently this number has decreased to 595.

The repair of the failed engine is from two to five million dollars and lasts two months, said two people. Repair the engine manufacturer shall at his own expense, however, for the lease of a replacement engine pays the airline itself. “We need to create a Bank of replacement engines, but the French put the price unacceptable,” he said at the forum “Transport of Russia” on 20 November, the Deputy Minister of industry Oleg Bocharov.

Engines SaM146 Powerjet lets enterprise, created with the participation of the Russian “Saturn” (responsible for the fan, low-pressure turbine, performs General Assembly and bench testing) and the French Safran (the gas generator in the composition of the high-pressure compressor, combustor, high pressure turbine, the engine control system and gearbox). The production capacities allow to produce annually 60 to 70 engines, which are supplied 30-35 new aircraft.

Short-haul passenger aircraft Sukhoi Superjet 100, developed by company “Sukhoi Civil aircraft”, first flew in may 2008. In the basic version the machine accommodates 98 people and is designed for flights of up to 4.5 thousand kilometers. The share of foreign components in the Sukhoi Superjet 100 is estimated at 70 percent, including 10 percent American. Currently the largest operator of Sukhoi Superjet 100 in Russia — “Aeroflot” abroad — Mexican carrier Interjet.

Sukhoi Superjet 100 delivered to airlines since 2011. Average flight cars in Russia in 2017 amounted to 3.3 hours a day. For comparison, age-related regional Embraer E170 operated by S7 Airlines, flown in 2017, an average of 6 hours a day. Plaque medium-haul aircraft (mainly Airbus 320/321 and Boeing 737) is about 10 hours a day.
