The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that will not allow you to put pressure on believers in the country. The head of state told the TV channel “112 Ukraine”, reports on Saturday, December 1, RIA Novosti.
According to the Ukrainian leader, believers will be able to choose what Church they go to. “The state guarantees the constitutional right of freedom of religion, including those who want to remain in communion with the Russian Church. But the “fingers fan” of the Moscow Patriarchate [of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP)] then the set will no longer be”, — he said.
Poroshenko also stressed that he did not intend to build Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine in the status of the state and to something to “nudge” their citizens.
14 November it was reported that the Ukrainian President before the Cathedral of the canonical UOC-MP yelled on the phone at her head of Metropolitan Onufriy and did not attend the event.
Church schism in Ukraine escalated in early autumn, when the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew has confirmed his intention to provide Ukraine autocephaly (Church independence) and removed the anathema of the heads of the schismatic churches. The UOC-MP in connection with this severed relations with the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
Ukraine has three Orthodox churches. The canonical UOC-MP is self-governing in the structure of the ROC. Two other churches, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), are schismatic and not recognized by world Orthodoxy.
