Documents from the archives of Soviet intelligence was declassified in the fall of 2018. According to Medina, they contain the details of the investigation of all the circumstances of the battle and of improper execution of award documents for the heroes. Agency staff interviewed the soldiers who were posthumously awarded the list of the guardsmen, however, survivors, and other participants in the battle. The testimony of military personnel confirm that on 16 November 1941 under Dubosekovo took the fight, in which 28 soldiers were opposed by German tanks.
The Minister is confident that the new documents make it possible to reliably establish the historical fact of the feat. However, he noted that the case remained inaccurate. So, it is unknown exactly how many heroes fought with tanks, how many of them survived and at what moment the battle was a struggle.
In 2016, Medina wrote in “Rossiiskaya Gazeta” article in defense of the 28 Panfilov. Then he referred to the essay “On the 28 fallen heroes” in the newspaper “Red star” dated 28 November 1941, which was first reported on the feat.
In 1948, the Chief military Prosecutor’s office completed the investigation of the fight and found that the part of the awarded posthumously fighters survived. In addition, it was discovered inconsistencies in the official version of the battle. Later, some historians have argued that the story of Panfilov — just a legend and not supported by the facts.
