President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko awarded the order of Yaroslav the Wise of the two metropolitans of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in support of the establishment of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Church. This is stated on the official website of the President.
In the decree awarding said that the Metropolitan of Cherkasy and Kaniv Sofronii and Metropolitan Anatoly of Sarny and Polissya awarded the order as “persons who have made a significant personal contribution to state-building, cultural and educational development of Ukraine”. Both awarded Metropolitan — known supporters of the split.
November 20, Poroshenko met with Metropolitan Sophronios and thanked him for his support in separating from the ROC. The President noted the patriotism of the priest and his contribution to the future of the Ukrainian Autocephalous local Orthodox Church.
Church schism in Ukraine escalated a few months ago. In early October, at the Cathedral Church of Constantinople Patriarch Bartholomew confirmed his intention to provide Ukraine with autocephaly, took of the anathema with the heads of schismatic churches, and restored its jurisdiction over the Kyivan Metropolitanate. In this regard, the UOC-MP broke with the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
Ukraine has three Orthodox churches. The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate is self-governing in the structure of the ROC. Two other churches, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), are schismatic and not recognized by world Orthodoxy. From the schismatic churches and defected to their side of the hierarchs of the UOC-MP is supposed to create a so-called Single local Orthodox Church.
