The Union of European football associations (UEFA) approved a new club tournament. The competition will be held in 2021-2024. This was reported in the Sunday, December 2, on the organization’s website.
This decision was taken at a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee in Dublin.
The working title of the tournament — UEL2 (UEFA Europa League 2). It is noted that the games will be held according to the same scheme that in the Champions League and the Europa League. In competitions will take part 32 teams, they were divided into eight groups of four each. The playoffs will begin with the 1/8 final, and in front of him held an additional round, which will play the team that took second place in the group UEL2 and third places in the groups of Europa League.
The winner UEL2 next season will play in the Europa League. The group stage will be reduced to 32 teams (now 48), and before the 1/8 will hold an additional round involving second teams of the groups of the Europa League and third League Champions. The format of the latter will remain unchanged.
“The new tournament will make the competition more inclusive than ever before. More games for more clubs, more associations in the group stages. These contests are the result of constant dialogue with the clubs through the Association of the European Cup,” said UEFA President Alexander Ceferin, founder.
Currently in Europe at club level is held two tournaments — the Champions League and Europa League, which before the season 2009/2010 had a different format and was called the UEFA Cup.
