The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko announced the date of the Unification Council, which will adopt the Statute of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. About it reports “Interfax”.
“The Cathedral will take place on 15 December 2018”, — said the Ukrainian leader on the local self-government forum in Kyiv.
The Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople approved the draft Charter of the Ukrainian local Church last week, but it won’t be released until the Unification of the Cathedral. As reported by the newspaper “Vesti”, the draft Statute does not involve the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church in the system of local churches. In particular, to lead the Ukrainian Church is Metropolitan and not a Patriarch.
In addition, the Ukrainian Church will not be able to canonize saints, but only to transmit their names to the Patriarch of Constantinople for approval. Also, the Patriarch becomes the highest appellate structure, which may apply to the hierarchs of the Ukrainian churches in case of disagreement with the decisions of its leadership.
Currently, Ukraine has three Orthodox churches. The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) is self-governing in the structure of the ROC. Two other churches, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), considered to be schismatic and not recognized by world Orthodoxy.
However, in the early autumn of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew removed the anathema with the heads of schismatic churches and expressed the intention to provide Ukraine with the autocephaly (independence). The UOC-MP in connection with this severed relations with the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
