The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the draft law on the legal status of the adjacent Maritime territory. On Thursday, December 6, reported on the official website of the Parliament of the country.
For the corresponding document voted 244 MPs. “Adjacent area of Ukraine is an area of open sea adjacent to the territorial sea of Ukraine, the external boundary of which is at a distance of not more than 24 nautical miles”, — stated in the explanatory note to the document. Before that Ukraine’s territorial waters was 12 miles.
According to the draft law, Ukraine will be able to stop and search any vessels, as well as to detain or arrest them and crew members, with the exception of warships and other government ships used for non-commercial purposes. Thus will monitor the security of the region and respect for the sovereignty of the country.
The bill will strengthen the functions of the frontier service, and increase opportunities for the protection of the coastal zone, said the head of the parliamentary Committee on national security and defence Ivan Vinnik, reports TASS. According to him, the border guards will extend the authority of the use of weapons.
November 8, the deputies adopted the bill on the expansion of marine territory in the first reading.
Ukraine is not the first time introduces legal changes in the marine area. In January 2017, it was reported that the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on the admission into the country of foreign military in 2017, in particular, of NATO ships to participate in U.S.-Ukrainian maneuvers.
