The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is concerned that the Moscow city court invalidated the decision of the court of arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the President of the bobsleigh Federation of Russia Alexander Zubkov. This was reported on the website of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).
The IOC appealed to the OCD to ensure implementation of decisions by the CAS. If it is determined the failure to comply with the provisions of the Olympic Charter, the IOC against Russia can be applied a variety of sanctions. The Russian national team, in particular, could face a suspension from participation in the 2020 Olympic games to be held in Tokyo. The ROC in turn has filed an appeal against the decision of Moscow city court.
On 22 November, the IOC asked Zubkov to return the two gold medals. The day before the Moscow city court allowed Zubkov to retain the status of the Olympic champion and keep the rewards, despite the decision of CAS. “The judge recognized the decision made by CAS, on the territory of Russia, there was no evidence. Thus, the decision on the recognition of me in the territory of the Russian Olympic champion”, — Zubkov said after the meeting.
In November 2017 Zubkov was convicted of violating anti-doping rules at the Olympics in 2014 and disqualified for life. The sportsman was stripped of two gold medals of the Sochi Games, which he won in competitions twos and fours. Later, the CAS overturned the lifetime suspension Zubkov, but did not return of his Olympic medals.
