Philippines buy from USA 16 Black Hawk helicopters, abandoning the cheaper Russian Mi-171 due to US sanctions in respect of arms exports from Russia. This was reported by Reuters.
Initially, the country was going to buy a Bell 412 helicopters from Canada, but the canadian government canceled the deal because of concerns that the vehicles will be used against the rebels.
The Philippines also considered South Korean Surion and Anglo-Italian Agusta Westland AW139, but in the end decided to conclude the purchase contract with the American firm Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. According to the Minister of defense of the Philippines Delfin Lorenzana, the price offered by Russia, was one of the lowest, but this option had to dismiss due to difficulties in payments caused by the U.S. sanctions.
In September 2018 “Rosoboronexport” reported that, despite U.S. sanctions, Russian arms exports increased significantly.
