Scientists of the Arctic floating University was first discovered microplastics in the Kara sea during the voyage on the ship “Professor Molchanov” this summer. TASS said the Vice-rector for international cooperation of the University Konstantin Zaikov.

According to Zaikova, this year was conducted expedition to study the micro-plastic in the White, Kara and Barents seas. In the past the experts have registered serious pollution in the White sea. The maximum concentration of the micro-plastic was found on the border of White and Barents seas area of heavy traffic. In the Kara sea, which is very little involved in the economic activities of microplastics were found in small quantities, and it is unknown where he came from.

“Or it mikrochastitsy from rybopromyshlennikov, or it is particles that come from the wastewater of cities mainly with the Gulf stream, then there is of microplastics from Europe, which migrates from the Barents sea. We have completed work to determine the level of various pollutants in this micro-plastic to potentially identify a threat to humans,” he said.

The microplastics are the result of disintegration of plastic products. In size it is similar to plankton, so often becomes the food for fish, birds, marine mammals and cause their deaths.

The Arctic floating University is a joint project of the Northern Arctic Federal University and the Northern Directorate for Hydrometeorology and environmental monitoring. In the course of flight are explored Arctic territory in different directions. Flight of 2018 was held in the White, Barents and Kara seas, the majority of studies conducted on the North-Eastern coast of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.
