Russia’s response to the ultimatum of the United States under the Treaty on elimination of intermediate range (the INF Treaty) may be a modification of missiles 9М729, has declared “news” the Vice-President on information policy of the Russian Academy of rocket and artillery Sciences (raran) doctor of military Sciences Konstantin Sivkov.
“It is possible to modify only in terms of range increase. Because currently, the missile has a small range and does not ensure the defeat of ground targets at a great distance,” — said the expert.
In his opinion, at present, the range 9М729 does not exceed 400 kilometers, because the missile does not violate the INF Treaty.
In December, Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said that Washington will come from the INF Treaty if Moscow does not return to its execution within 60 days. At the same time the Deputy head of the U.S. state Department for arms control and international security Andrea Thompson urged Russia to abandon missile 9М729 or modify it.
In October, the President of the United States Donald trump, citing a breach of the agreement by Russia and the build-up of arms by China, has announced its intention to withdraw from the agreement.
The INF Treaty signed between the Soviet Union and the United States in 1987. The agreement prohibits the parties to produce, test and deploy ballistic and cruise land-based missiles of medium (1,000 to 5,500 kilometers) and small (from 500 to 1000 km) range, and requires parties to eliminate the corresponding launcher.
The United States accused Russia that the latter hides the true potential of cruise missiles 9М729 complex “Iskander-M”. In the Pentagon believe that a ground missile has a range of 500 kilometers.
