Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presented the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (PCU) to Metropolitan Epiphanius the Tomos of autocephaly. The ceremony was held on Sunday, January 6, at the Cathedral of St. George in Istanbul, reports TASS.
Bartholomew signed the Tomos on the eve of January 5th. Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) said that the decree does not have canonical force.
Ptsu was established on 15 December 2018 at the unity Cathedral in Kiev, which was attended by representatives of the unrecognized Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kiev Patriarchate (UOC KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). From the UOC-MP at the event there were only two of a priest.
On 11 October, the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate decided to cancel the decree from 1686 on the transfer of the Kyiv metropolis Moscow and removed the anathema from the heads of the UOC-KP and the UAOC. In response, the ROC severed Eucharistic communion with Constantinople and declared a schismatic Bartholomew.
