Japanese authorities intend to invite Russia to refuse mutual claims for compensation on the South Kuriles. On Tuesday, January 8, according to the Yomiuri, citing its sources.
Moscow will be announced this idea during the next negotiations between countries on a peace Treaty.
Previously, Japan was considered the Southern Kuriles occupied territory since the Second world war, so Tokyo has reserved the right to seek compensation for the taking of land. Now the authorities treat it with doubt, believing that such claims will complicate dialogue with Russia.
Following the end of world war II between Moscow and Tokyo never signed a peace Treaty. The main obstacle to his signing was the unresolved territorial dispute over the southern Kuril Islands — Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai.
The Japanese side calls the Southern Kuril Islands the “Northern territories” and over them does not recognize Russian sovereignty. Moscow, in turn, does not recognize the fact of the territorial dispute.
