Russia is an open confrontation with Western States that directly affect the security of Norway and the allied countries. According to the Minister, Russia is seeking to undermine the unity of the West and international cooperation, and uses its military and economic power, ignoring the diplomacy. “Overall, the developments in our environment shows that we have to consider that an armed conflict between States in Europe is no longer unthinkable,” — he stressed.

Bakke-Jensen added that the consequences of a collision can be very serious for the far North. He also recalled the many failures of GPS systems during a NATO exercise, which allegedly involved the Russian military.

12 November 2018, Prime Minister of Finland, Juha Sipilä said that the GPS system was broken on purpose, and suggested that Russia may have a bearing on this crash. “GPS is quite easy to disable, it is possible that Russia is behind this. (…) This message to all countries participating in military exercises,” said Sipilä.

Later, the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov complained about the tendency “to blame Russia in all mortal sins and other”. He stressed that the Kremlin is unaware of when the Russian military failure in Norway.

In December 2018, the British newspaper the Daily Express suggested that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine could escalate into a serious collision after the incident in the Kerch Strait and passage of a Russian frigate off the coast of Crimea.
