The Vice-President of the European Commission Jyrki Katainen has ranked Russia, the US and China to face external challenges for the EU. About it reports “Interfax”.
“We (…) opposed to external factors. For Example, Russia. In particular, for Ukraine. Or when it comes to interfering in our democratic processes. This creates a problem. We must be ready to repulse such attempts at intervention,” Katainen said at a press conference on the results of the first in the new year meeting of the European Commission in Brussels.
Intercom calls to the block it took the creation of new jobs and designing the future of the European Union. In addition, said the Deputy head of the European Commission, some EU countries “have serious problems” with respect to the rule of law. In his opinion, these countries include Poland, Hungary and Romania, which from 1 January 2019 occupies the post of the presidency of the EU Council.
“Europe is based on such fundamental values as the rule of law, human rights, human dignity, freedom of the press, freedom of expression. And when these values are violated, it is always a major challenge,” concluded Katainen.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that he doubted the willingness of the Romanian government to the chairmanship of the EU Council. EU member States have become presidents of the EU Council for a period of six months. Romania joined the bloc in 2007 together with Bulgaria.
